I ended up doing this drawing while listening to two unedited radio podcasts on voodoo, from Speaking of Faith. It was very interesting, and it allowed me to not concentrate too much on, or completely abandon the drawing (for a few hours at least...) as usual, I think I made my head too big!

Evelyn.
Went to my grandparent's house today, and did two quick portraits of Evelyn (who was a very good and patient model!) The first is charcoal..I tried to focus on the value shifts/cast shadows, the second is water soluble crayons! I tried to focus more on temperature shifts. I should have taken a picture before and after adding water...it changed a lot! Trying to get back in the swing with portraits...We'll see how it goes :)

Landscapes (productive again!)
I hate those positive feedback loops where I feel unproductive and depressed, so I don't feel like painting, and thus end up feeling more unproductive and depressed..and on and on. But no more! Did this landscapey on gessoed wood this afternoon, plus a quicky with my leftover paint. I feel pretty rusty after not picking up my brush in two weeks, but man I missed it..

Went to the Getty Villa today with my family. Wow, two years since it had reopened. Hopefully I'll get to go again before I leave...the gardens are just so beautiful, I end up spending most of my time there instead of checking out all those amphoras and massive Herculaneums! Portraits.

I had a lovely week in Indiana, visiting my sister! We organized, cooked maahvelous things, and I was able to work on my portraiture. The first is a quick one of Jeana as she relaxed (limited pallete--alizarin crimson, ultramarine blue, cadmium yellow). The rest are of some of her friends that were kind enough to sit for me! These all range from about an hour, maybe two..it was tough working in limited time, but it was great practice! Maybe I'll get my parents to sit for me next...

The middle landscape is blue/black, yellow ochre and white! I'm most pleased with that one...the last one would have been better if the people at the park didn't deflate the fun jumpy house! grr!

I knew I had to do at least one self portrait while on break, so here it is (pardon the picture, it turned out very yellow for some reason). I did the one on the left over a week ago, and just finished up a day or two ago (I need deadlines to ever get stuff done..ugh) but anyway, on to the usual reasons of why I'm never completely pleased with anything--the left one is too imagey, and has too much contrast, the right one has too little contrast and I lost some definition with sloppy brushwork. But overall they were fun to do!

Gotta pack, heading back to Long Beach tomorrow, and a new semester of drawing and painting marvelousness!

Painting Final.
Sorry for the bad picture, I'll try and get a better one later. Color Theory and Life Painting finals are done. I'm still not sure how I feel about this piece. Yu Ji said my shadows are still a little too brown...and I honestly don't know what my grade will be. arg arg. But I kind of feel like I am just starting to (finally) understand painting. Went to the Huntington Library today to meet my parents for tea and boutique holiday shopping. I had a lovely time looking at beautiful things, and escaping temporarily from homework land. On the drive home, the clouds were so lovely I couldn't resist taking some pictures..bad habit, I know..but oh welll! Then I did my compositional study for my massive final painting in a few hours...wee!

Sunday Model Session.
Happy post-thanksgiving! This is Gracie, our model today. She's a little person and very very nice. It was one of the first times we all talked and laughed and listened to music while drawing... the atmosphere was very light. I practiced painting, this was only 3 hours and I spent a lot of time on the drawing part (trying to be patient and whatnot) But I was pretty pleased with it aside from some of the thicker outlines..

Burn Burn.

OK! My second attempt at a dual self-portrait (hopefully Yu Ji will not laugh this time...) I look a bit funky in the first one..but I was told that I looked super tired and like I'd been crying excessively all that day. Woo. I'm not sure if I got the shadows right on the 2nd one, but I worked pretty hard on them.

AND then, Sunday Model Session. It took me a while to get into drawing mode, but we had a lovely model and I was pretty pleased with my last one. Now...off to the land of color theory!

Life Painting Midterm (ick)
This was my midterm, I only spent 2 nights on it, and wasn't too pleased with the outcome. My forms were clear, and I managed to keep my colors fairly un-muddy, but there is still sooo much to work on! And I can't believe there is only a month or so left until finals. Crazyness. Stuff! (and 200th post?!)

OK. I have a lot of stuff (well, some) from the last month or so...But I am too lazy to post it all now. So here are my latest things, a sketch of Yu Ji drawing the model from Sunday, and my dual self portrait homework. I did the one on the left late last night, and the one on the right in between my classes this afternoon. This is me saying I am not satisfied with them. My nose is weird! Halloween!

My computer is fixed now (thanks to Brian :) So I can return to my regular posting schedule, woo! I have many mediocre paintings to post once I get the chance to photograph them...But until then, this is my Halloween costume! I am Bluebeard's (murdered) wife. Baby Shower sketches.

Went to a good family friends shower the other day, the theme was "the very hungry caterpillar" it was really cute. I forgot how fun it is to work in contour. I had a weirdly good time drawing that chair...it was a really good model.

A small landscape I did near my house yesterday, in true plein air. It was really difficult...the subtleties of the sandstone colors were really hard to catch, and everything turned out too brown. But yes, this is one of the landmarks of my neighborhood--Face Rock!

Soooo...I just got back from my painting final portfolio review. Domenic said my three strongest paintings are that first still life from class, this portrait, and my final self portrait. He said I used my colors most effectivly in these and didn't neutralize them like I seem to do in my other paintings. And, um, I got an A. I <3 painting!

Sofonisba Anguissola.

I love learning new stuff. Like who the first successful woman artist of the Renaissance is. She is like..my new hero. She studied painting, created her own unique style, was freaking friends with Michelangelo(!!!!), went to Spain and became a court painter to the king (and gave the queen painting lessons!), and was internationaly known...and well, awesome.

here's her self portrait. (and another...and one more) She was restricted to doing portraits mainly, since women were barred from studying anatomy and the nude figure. But she did several self portraits, and I'm totally digging this quote about her I found in my art history book, "there is nothing I desire more than an image of the artist herself, so that in a single work I can exhibit two marvels, one the work, the other the artist" --Annibale Carro.

So yes, I'm hoping that procrastination in the form of being an art history nerd is acceptable when I'm really supposed to be writing my mega art history paper of doom!! (actually, it's not that bad, I have 2 pages written...I'm just unhappy with the timing of this week) But yes! Maybe I'll post some art tomorrow after I re-work my second conte portrait. The apple was giving me an incredibly hard time, and now that I look at it, everything looks kind of floaty. My palette was getting kind of muddled too...but I had fun painting it (for the most part) and that's what counts, right?

I drew this on Monday before painting...I was sitting on the grass doodling my usual girls, but I had to stop and draw this napper..I just loved her pose! she was just so curled in on herself...but I only got this little sketch in before she woke up and left, ah well!

My first in-class painting: completed (or as good as it's gonna get). Amanda thought it was an actual photograph at first..yay! (of course..she was across the room...) but I'm still pretty happy. We'll see how the crit goes on Wednesday..

Sunday Model Session #4?

Hmm..I think my first one turned out the best. I was abit overzealous with the shading on the second one..and I'm still too smudgy with pencil...oh well..more practice!!

doodle from art history, I think I have a thing with elaborate hair dos...and then this week's life drawing portrait. We only had two sessions to work on it, and my drawing was going reallllly good the first session, but then I messed it up when I started shading, and I didn't finish...oh well, the model liked it :)

Random inspiration craft project of the day--self portrait on a lovely piece of sentimental cardboard. I think I learned a lot about face construction from last week's life drawing class..and I will learn so much more this week when we start shading! yay. I had fun making my eyes black..mwaha. but my nose is funky. Babel was interesting..needs time to mull in my mind. oh, life!

yay trees :) I drew the first one like...two weeks ago before Italian class. It started to turn into a girl...then I drew the other ones quickly this morning, they had so much movement..oh man. The week is over. How wonderful.

From the life drawing demo on Tuesday...we are starting our portrait study today--excitedness/nervousnessss! And then my doodle page of sorts from Art History this morning..her proportions make little to no sense, but ah well. Time to go to Poli Sci and draw some more!

woo...a post! (go me)

So yes. I watched a movie this evening. The Secret of Roan Inish--a movie my roomie and I both watched and liked when we were little (but we couldn't really remember what it was about, so we rented it to find out!) So, while watching, I took had some nice quality drawing time (with pastels and pencil) and I ended up with Lilith? (that's what she reminds me of, anyway)

And then, there is my painting still life homework. Limited pallette--cadmium yellow light, cadmium red, and ultramarine blue (and white). The white cup was a bitch to do, I'm still not happy with it, but oh welllll...

Sunday Model Session #3

eh, i did ok today..but I didn't feel as free as last week. Our model was really cool though, she has the sweetest smile that I could not capture for the life of me! She also has a cute dog named Valentino :) Hopefullu I will post more this week. Gotta work on my painting homework!!

Sunday Model Session, part 2

Today was very productive (well, the model session was at least) The first one felt a little stiff, but then I started using pen, and wee! much better. (the first was 30 minutes, the second was 50 minutes, and the last two, 20 minutes) It was very tempting to draw wings on that last pose--it reminded me of Eros watching Psyche slumber. Maybe I'll add them after I turn in my sketchbook for the semester :)

Ok, goal for the week: draw more, and actually post something!
